“I used to think that the sky only stretched on for as far as I could see. And then where my vision became blurred, the world ceased to exist. But that was before. Before I packed my faith in a suitcase, and my fear in a carry-on, and boarded a plane. I’ve only been abroad for eight months and fourteen days, but I feel I’ve lived a lifetime. And as for home, I know now that it hasn’t just one name.”– Elizabeth J. Upton
Elizabeth Jane Upton, a Columbia native, participated in the Rotary Youth Exchange program during the 2013–2014 academic year in France. Shortly after returning home, she passed away. In her memory, and to honor her adventurous spirit, her parents, Marilyn and Gary Upton, established the Elizabeth J. Upton Foundation.
The foundation’s mission is to support both inbound and outbound students in Rotary District 6080’s Youth Exchange Program. Through language acquisition, educational travel opportunities, and cultural enrichment, the foundation strives to cultivate globally minded citizens and life-changing international experiences.
As a nonprofit organization, we gratefully accept donations via Venmo, check, or cash. Each year, we also host our signature “Coffee and Crêpes” fundraiser. This event brings the community together to enjoy freshly made crêpes—prepared with the help of prospective exchange students—while learning more about Rotary Youth Exchange, the Elizabeth J. Upton Foundation, and French culture.
Elizabeth’s story continues to inspire those around her. We hope to carry forward her legacy by helping students experience the same growth, perspective, and opportunity that shaped her journey, and by continuing our mission for years to come.
